1980 BMW 633 CSI
This car has been in BMW's Roundel magazine and was featured at the 2007 Euro Auto Festival, here is the story about the car and details below!
The BMW CCA Foundation sent out an e-mail to a group of regional Club members in an effort to find a suitable donor car. The tremendous response actually made the decision process like being a kid in a candy store. Many interesting BMW vehicles were offered, ranging from driveaway used cars to unfinished projects, to “for sale complete or for parts” cars. Finally, organizers selected the classic coupe style of the E24 6 Series. The donated vehicle is a 1980 633CSi coupe needing the tender loving touches that only dedicated BMW lovers could provide.
Make that dedicated BMW lovers and skilled restoration experts---because this year the crew is going all out. Instead of body-and-paint repairs, the BMW Performance Center gang decided to replace all of the sheet metal on the car except the roof panel! That means this car will be virtually a new car externally. The interior will be reconditioned, too, of course---but it’s the external appearance of the finished product that will dazzle observers. Though organizers have been wrestling with color choices, the short list seems to be in the red spectrum: Calypso Red, Hellrot, or Imola Red, with the latter leading by a nose.
Instead of a traditional restoration, the Performance Center will actually enhance the coupe with minor aesthetic---and practical---touches. A front air dam and rear spoiler will add to the sleek looks. These days, owners expect more than a simple AM/FM radio, so the winner of the big red coupe will be able to join the iPod/MP3 generation. And then there’s the one annoying flaw in the original 6 Series design: Anyone who’s had any history with the seductive Sixer knows the horror of dealing with its metric-sized TRX wheels and tires. The solution is beautifully simple: big BBS wheels shod with low-profile rubber.
